...:::::::DJ SHADOW'S SHADOWSPHERE:::::::...

DJ Shadow brings his "Shadowsphere" to Portland's Roseland Theater.  What's the Shadowsphere?  Well it's a giant white orb that has DJ Shadow on the inside making great music, but on the outside it is lit up with multiple projectors projecting scenes to the music onto the orb.  Also there were two great performances one by Portland's own DJ WICKED, and another great from the Quannum crew Pigeon John.

...:::::::OREGON FLY FISHING PHOTOGRAPHY:::::::...

The Famous Salmonfly Hatch on the Deschutes River

Lately I've been getting into some other photography besides just the music stuff, going back to my roots as an aspiring Ansel Adams wannabe.  Taking my camera with me as I explore the rivers of Oregon has been a great experience and a way to both relax and be creative all in one swoop.  I've been inspired a lot by some local sites that have incredible articles, photography and video.

Here is a photo essay from the evening below.

Also, If you want to vote on my image in Billboard's Ultimate Music Moment Contest.
The winner's image will be published in PDN Magazine, which is kind of a big deal!

...:::::::SOUL'D OUT MUSIC FESTIVAL:::::::...

I was honored to photograph some of the great music legends the past few weeks.  The Soul'd Out Music Festival has now come to an end, and with it comes a little rest, and a lot of photo editing.  Here's the bands I was able to attend and capture through the lens.

  *****
The first annual Soul'd Out Music Festival takes place over two weeks, throughout eight of Portland's most prestigious venues. Featuring artists from across the musical spectrum, SOMF brings them all together under the banner of soulful music. Soul music, unlike any other, has the unique ability to unite us across perceived differences in race, culture or generation. Soulful, uplifting music, re-created in the live setting, is one of the most healing and profound means of expression humanity has. This music is the most effective tool of bringing about positive social evolution. We offer this festival as the beginning of a new movement towards realizing music's inherent healing and transformative qualities, and as a means of applying these qualities directly in our ever expanding community. The Soul'd Out Music Festival was created in November 2009, with the inaugural festivities scheduled for April 2010, as a means by which to give a platform to music often overlooked by the commercial music industry, as well as to firmly supplant Portland as the West Coast's premier independently-minded music market.

...:::::::BERNARD "PRETTY" PURDIE, VAGABOND OPERA & DEVOTCHKA:::::::...

The Soul'd Out Music Festival here in Portland has taken a turn I wasn't expecting with Portland's own
VAGABOND OPERA.
Their music and theatrics, left the crowd in a state of awe wanting more.  I'm sure if they were the headliners they could have easily coaxed two or three encores.
 I was able to join my friends before the Vagabond Opera/Devotchka show over for the all-ages Jimmy Mak's show of legendary drummer Bernard "Pretty" Purdie.

...:::::::GIL SCOTT-HERON:::::::...

I was lucky enough to photograph the legendary Gil Scott-Heron in Portland's Aladdin Theater for the Soul'd Out Music Festival.
He was great, actually starting the first 15 minutes of the show with some stand-up comedy,
which was well executed and pretty funny.  Half way through the show he paused to greet his long time friend and fellow musical legend Bernard Purdie. Seriously look him up, he's probably played drums on one of your favorite songs.

...:::::::DJ P & EGYPTIAN LOVER:::::::...

Always a pleasure to see DJ P perform, he's truly one of the greats.  Speaking of which, Egyptian Lover opened with some super old school, bringing back the 808, to where it went I'm not quite sure.  This was all for Refuge, a new club that opened in the South East.

...:::::::HANK WILLIAMS lll & ASSJACK:::::::...

Here's what Wikipedia has to say about Hank lll.
Hank 3 is an American country, punk and metal musician. The grandson of country legend Hank Williams and the son of Hank Williams Jr., he is one of the most prominent musicians to play neotraditional country in a country music market dominated by pop country.  In addition to his honky tonk recordings, Williams' style alternates between punk and metal.

What I saw was one of the most extreme concert experiences ever, as I hardly attend Metal or Punk shows... Maybe I should go to more just to be more prepared.  I thought it was great to see people flying over the barricade into the pit every minute or two...fun times...

...:::::::SNOOP DOGG:::::::...

Snoop Dogg at the Roseland Theater.
It's always great to photograph someone who you listened to while growing up.  I remember playing Star Fox on my friends Super Nintendo listing to the Chronic and hearing Snoops first main stream tracks.
Who knew he would become such an icon.  This is what I saw.

::::Medeski, Martin and Wood::::

Medeski, Martin and Wood at the Roseland Theater 2010.
This jazz trio, hands down one of my favorites.  They performed a 2 part performance with an intermission that was about a 10 minute long bass solo.  Unbelievable.

::::GOODIE MOB with ANIMAL FARM::::

The Goodie Mob has reunited and made a stop to Portland's Roseland Theater.  I was reading about them reuniting last year for some Atlanta performances, and never thought I'd get to see them, let alone taking the show on the road through Portland.  I guess something clicked and it happened.

Goodie Mob are:

Big Gipp

:::THE ROOTS with ORGONE:::

This Holiday season the Legendary will treat their fans to a short mini-tour, in their brief time-off from Fallon. Maintaining their status as the hardest working group in hip-hop...

The Roots graced the stage of the Roseland Theater once again to deliver the first good news of 2010.
